Stop Press: Draft Charities Bill due to be published

A draft bill outlining the future of the country's charitable, voluntary and community sectors was due to be published as Regeneration & Renewal went to press. The draft Charities Bill, which will include details of the biggest reform of charities law in over 400 years, was expected to be unveiled by voluntary sector minister Fiona MacTaggart. The National Council for Voluntary Organisations called on the Government to ensure that the Bill becomes an Act before the end of 2005.

Stop Press: Select Committee report on obesity

Pedestrians have been "swept aside" by transport planners, a select committee report into the rise in obesity will say this week, according to a report on Radio 4's Today programme. The report will say that the Department for Transport has "allowed pedestrians and cyclists to be swept aside for two generations", the BBC claims. Tom Franklin, director of pressure group Living Streets, said: "That is why we need a national walking strategy, to turn that tide."
