The £500 million regeneration of Birmingham's Bull Ring is one of the joint winners of this year's Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' regeneration award. Covering 11ha, the development has been cited by many as the catalyst for the wider regeneration of Birmingham's city centre. It includes new car parking, open spaces and walkways, as well as the Selfridges store (above). The second winner is Edinburgh's Fourth Quarter, the site of the city's former gasworks, which is undergoing long-term redevelopment. Plans include at least 2,000 residential dwellings and a new Telford College campus featuring retail and mixed-use space, landscaped gardens and space for office accommodation.

School pupils, teachers and other members of the local community last week took part in a mass clean-up effort as part of a project to tackle anti-social behaviour in Runcorn, Cheshire. Pupils from Brookvale County Primary and Junior school joined their teachers, staff from the Arena Housing Association and members of Halton Borough Council's Neighbourhood Environment Action Team (NEAT) to clear 60 tonnes of rubbish from a playing field next to the school. Nigel Greenridge, housing manager at Arena, said he hoped the exercise would help to "channel young people's activities that will help them develop both a sense of pride in themselves and a sense of responsibility towards the community".
