Mouchel Parkman has secured four major contracts in the water sector, with an initial value of £73 million. The company will provide leakage detection services in north-east London for Thames Water and will manage Southern Water's sewage network throughout Kent, Sussex and Hampshire. The other two contracts are with Scottish Water, one to devise a network management strategy and leakage framework agreement and the other to upgrade waste water and water assets in Scottish Water's north-east region.
Economic Development News: Culture capital sets sail

Liverpool has beaten more than a dozen European cities to earn the right to host the start of the international Tall Ships Race in July 2008, it was announced last week. One million people are expected to visit the waterfront area to view the 100-strong Tall Ships fleet. The city council hopes the event will throw the spotlight on the city's Capital of Culture celebrations. A broad range of vessels will be docked at the city's Albert and Central Docks for four days before the race starts, and the council plans to develop an Olympic-style village to house the 3,000 crew near the docks. The fleet will travel from Liverpool to Norway, before ending its journey in Holland. Liverpool City Council leader Mike Storey is pictured hoisting the race flag with Nigel Rowe of young people's charity Sail Training International.
Business briefs: White Young Green to carry out research

The need for changes in the green belt around Greater Merseyside to accommodate likely development requirements up to 2021 and beyond is to be researched by White Young Green Planning's Manchester office. The study, to be carried out for the North West Regional Assembly, will examine the development requirements of housing, employment, education and transport and investigate whether the urban area can accommodate this growth.

The John Hughes Law Practice has won the Birmingham Law Society's 2004 Sole Practitioner of the Year Award. The Birmingham-based practice specialises in town and country planning, environmental law and other areas relating to the use and development of land and on boundary and party wall disputes. The firm said that the award is a huge honour for principal John Hughes, who has been involved in government consultations on planning and compulsory purchase law reform on behalf of the Birmingham Chamber.
Business briefs: Colin Buchanan and Partners awarded contract

Colin Buchanan and Partners have been awarded a two-year contract by Medway Council and the ODPM to research an integrated transport policy for Medway. A new transport system has been identified as a requirement to supplement the area's bus network in light of a projected travel increase. The research project will look at interfaces with other means of transport and will aim to deliver a range of short-term transport solutions. Medway has been identified by the government as an area ripe for substantial regeneration and growth under the ODPM's sustainable communities plan, the Thames Gateway framework and the North Kent area investment framework.

GL Hearn has secured planning consent for the conversion of a former shoe factory into a Homemaker store for the Plymouth and South West Co-operative Society Ltd. The site, comprising 1,858 sq m of retail space, is at the Liverton business park on the edge of Exmouth. GL Hearn's retail assessment showed that the store would help to retain spending in Exmouth and give residents more choice without prejudicing plans for additional retail space in the town.
Economic Development News: Losses may threaten tram plans

Plans for more trams to ease urban congestion could be undermined by new evidence that existing light rail systems are suffering from a lack of passengers and investment. Research published last week by public spending watchdog the National Audit Office (NAO) reveals that trams built since the 1980s have been dogged by low passenger numbers, high building costs and financial losses.
