In brief: Correction
23 April 2004
We stated that the Millennium Commission is to pump an extra £1.3 million into the National Botanic Garden of Wales (Planning, 26 March, p4). In fact, this is not an extra grant. The commission has offered a contribution of £300,000 to cover the garden's historic capital debt. The continuation will then mean that a walled garden at the site can go ahead with a grant of £600,000 from the commission. The gardens will also be able to apply for a further £750,000 in capital support.
In brief: Plan for wind turbines opposed by Open Spaces Society
23 April 2004
A plan to site 27 wind turbines on hilltop common land at Whinash near Tebay in Cumbria has been strongly opposed by the Open Spaces Society. The society argues that the turbines will devastate the landscape, which is close to the Lake District and Howgills. It claims that government reports in the 1940s recognised the area as being of national park quality and if it had been designated a park, the turbines would be illegal. The Council for National Parks and Friends of the Earth also oppose the plan.

The complex will include a casino and hotel, as well as plans for 1,000 new homes, a primary school and community facilities. Chairman Paul Scally said the club would extend the search for a new site further if the Temple Marsh plans are not approved.
