Regeneration News brief: Sports village proposal granted permission by Wigan BC

A proposal for a sports village has been granted permission by Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council. The £43 million Leigh Sports Village, proposed by Greenbank Partnerships, will include a 10,000-seat stadium for use by all the major sporting clubs in the town, including Leigh Centurions Rugby League Club and soccer team Leigh RMI. It will also include a building for the Leigh campus of Wigan and Leigh College, housing and shopping facilities, a hotel and and conference centre.

Results of a public consultation on the development of Margate are being analysed by Thanet District Council. Residents have been able to find out more about the Margate Masterplan proposals, which focus on the town centre and seafront, at an information trailer in the town and by logging on to the council's website. The study was commissioned by a partnership consisting of the district council, Kent County Council, the South East England Development Agency, English Partnerships and the South East England Tourist Board.
Regeneration News brief: Trinity House Lighthouse Service to retain presence in Harwich

Trinity House Lighthouse Service will be retaining its presence in Harwich thanks to funding from the East of England Development Agency. The agency has granted £2.5 million towards creating a main base for the service in the town. If planning permission is granted, a 1950s buoy repair yard will be replaced by an office for the service. The lighthouse authority for England, Wales and the Channel Islands had considered closing its Harwich site after a restructuring programme last year.
Regeneration News brief: Aylesbury NDC awarded funding

Aylesbury New Deal for Communities (NDC) has been awarded £11,238,000 by the London Housing Board, completing the funding required for the proposed works in the south-west corner of the Aylesbury Estate. The estate contains 2,742 homes, most of which are owned by the London Borough of Southwark. The NDC programme has already committed £8 million to the area in the first phase of its physical renewal strategy. The works include community safety measures, essential repairs and improved public spaces, as well as 100 new homes.
Regeneration News brief: Construction work begins in Carmarthen

Construction work has begun in Carmarthen, west Wales, as part of a £1.2 million regeneration scheme. The width of roads in pedestrian and shopping areas in the east of the town will be narrowed and parking bays will be established. The town's main shopping area will be transformed by improving the streets and altering traffic management. The scheme is being financed by the Welsh Assembly Government's transport and regeneration funds.

English Partnerships' national coalfields programme is to provide funding of up to £5,890,000 towards the clean-up of the former Old Boston colliery site in St Helens. The project will provide an access road to the site and environmental upgrades on the adjacent Old Boston Trading Estate. The development will create up to 520 jobs. The scheme has been chosen as one of four areas in England to act as a pilot for a new approach to economic development through a city growth strategy.

The ODPM has launched a web-based tool to make regeneration data more accessible. Floor Targets Interactive (FTI) is a web-based system for those involved in the progress of deprivation-related public service agreement targets. FTI contains data for all of England's local authorities down to district level, although the focus is on the 88 most disadvantaged areas that receive neighbourhood renewal funds. Floor Targets Interactive can be accessed through www.neighbourhood.gov.uk.

A community garden and play area at the Aylesbury Estate in south London was opened last week. Created by Groundwork Southwark and funded by Aylesbury New Deal for Communities, the play area includes children's play equipment, permanent table tennis tables, a giant draughts board and a raised stage for outdoor performances.
