In brief: South East Regional Assembly to hold debates

The South East England Regional Assembly is holding a series of debates this spring as part of drawing up its 20-year vision for the region. The workshops will feed into the South East Plan, the region's spatial strategy that will look ahead to 2026. Local groups, businesses and councillors will have a chance to discuss issues such as housing, transport, social issues, natural resources, economy and employment at 18 debates across the region.The assembly has also launched a website at www.southeastra.gov.uk/southeastplan.

The Local Government Association (LGA) has launched a manifesto for the future of local government in a bid to strengthen local politics and revitalise community life in England and Wales. The paper suggests a vision of self-governing communities with strong local identities by the year 2014. The LGA is urging town halls to think of ways to free local services from central control. It proposes giving communities greater financial independence and raising the importance of local politics. In brief: Terry's to close site in York

Chocolate firm Terry's is to close its site in York with the loss of more than 300 jobs. The company plans to cease production because a decline in export volume has left it unable to sustain the site. Production will be transferred to parent company Kraft Food's facilities in central and western Europe next year.
In brief: Urban development corporation to be created for Northamptonshire

An urban development corporation for west Northamptonshire is to be created, the government confirmed this week. Regeneration minister Lord Rooker said the corporation, proposed by the government earlier this year, will manage growth in the towns of Northampton, Daventry and Towcester. The government has made minor changes to the proposed boundary of the body as a result of the consultation responses.

Improvements to Edinburgh station begin

Design work to improve access and platform capacity at Waverley Station in Edinburgh will begin this month, transport minister Nicol Stephen announced on Tuesday. The work will increase the number of trains Waverley can accommodate from 24 to 28 and will provide two new through platforms, escalators, lifts and a protective canopy over Waverley Steps.
