In brief: Plans revealed for footbridge over River Tyne

Plans for a footbridge and cycleway across the River Tyne to connect the business park at Newburn Riverside with Blaydon shopping centre have been revealed by regional development agency One North East. The agency is working with Newcastle City Council, Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council and the Port of Tyne Authority on plans for a single span crossing.

Guidance to help introduce 20mph safety zones on Scottish roads with higher speed limits has been drawn up for local authorities. Scottish transport minister Nicol Stephen made the announcement at an event to mark World Health Day, which is devoted to road safety this year. The guidance will apply to schools on roads where the speed limit is higher than 30mph and will benefit schools in rural areas, many of which are on roads with speed limits of 40mph and above.

Battersea Power Station owner Parkview has agreed to pay the London Borough of Wandsworth £600,000 towards a centre for people applying for any of the 9,000 jobs planned for the redevelopment. Providing financial support for local employment is a condition of Parkview's planning permission.

Planning permission for a hotel in the grounds of Syon Park in Hounslow, west London, has been won by Radisson Edwardian Hotels and the Duke of Northumberland. The development will guarantee funding for the maintenance and restoration of the estate's assets, including the grade I listed Syon House, its park and gardens. The proposals include the restoration of the Capability Brown-designed landscape at the park.
