Work began on a 9,429 sq m Tesco Extra store in Stockport last week. The outlet, located at junction 27 of the M60 Manchester ring road, will provide up to 400 jobs. Taylor Woodrow is carrying out the construction, which is expected to last 45 weeks. Tesco contributed £6 million towards infrastructure works as part of the development.

Two major regeneration schemes were opened in Barry, south Wales, last week. An education centre on the town's waterfront was opened on the same day as the third phase of the adjacent Vale of Glamorgan Steam Railway line was completed. The centre, supported by Vale of Glamorgan Council and the Welsh Development Agency, will form a major part of an education quarter.

Michael Ziff, chairman of footwear retailer Stylo PLC, has been appointed chairman of urban regeneration company Bradford Centre Regeneration this week. Ziff succeeds David Anderson, the former chief executive of the Yorkshire Building Society. Trevor Lewis, former vice-chairman of Bradford & Bingley PLC, becomes deputy chairman of the company.

Simons Estates has been appointed as the preferred developer and buyer for the Sovereign Street site in Leeds city centre. Leeds City Council approved the appointment following a public exhibition of three shortlisted schemes. A mixed-use scheme is proposed at the 1.16ha site, featuring office space, a hotel, car parking and affordable housing.
