A study of ways to tackle night-time disorder in Colchester has been completed by Urban Cultures Ltd for the Colchester Town Partnership. The report is intended to reduce problems associated with the late-night economy. It proposes co-ordinated action on liquor licensing, policing, anti-social behaviour, planning permissions, opening hours, the location of taxi ranks, lighting, safe walking routes and residential amenity. Consultancy Scott Wilson has been commissioned by Rugby Borough Council to assess its draft local plan for sustainability. Director Glyn Roberts said that winning the bid highlights the firm's experience in sustainability appraisal. It has carried out similar work for Gateshead's unitary development plan review.

Mouchel Parkman has been appointed by urban regeneration company Liverpool Vision to advise on transport proposals for the King's Dock site on Liverpool Waterfront. The site covers more than 14ha and its redevelopment is a vital component in the approved regeneration strategy for Liverpool city centre. The development is intended to provide world-class conference facilities, a multi-purpose arena, hotels and residential apartments. The civic facilities are expected to be operational in time for Liverpool's European Capital of Culture year in 2008.

The University of Strathclyde is reviewing its estates strategy and has appointed design engineer Arup to advise on its ten-year £81 million campus masterplan. The company will create development concepts for the future campus, focusing on sustainability. The masterplan will address energy efficiency, examine the potential for using renewable energies and look at the use of passive systems and water recycling.

A comprehensive masterplan for Stockport town centre is being drawn up by Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council and the Building Design Partnership. It will address the outdated 1960s design aspects of the town, the large unwelcoming bus station and poorly designed office blocks. More than £30 million has already been spent restoring the historic market area as part of the Gateway to the Future regeneration plan.

A toolkit to help make London's suburbs more sustainable is to be prepared by the Urban and Economic Development Group. The project, commissioned by the Greater London Authority, the London Development Agency and the London Government Association, will draw on advice from experts and will include discussion groups. It will also focus on case studies. The toolkit is expected to be ready by the end of May.

It aims to provide a strategy to offer choices on how to travel to the site and reduce traffic congestion. The authority is relocating to meet operational needs and to improve public access to its services. The plan is expected to be complete by June 2005, when the facility becomes operational.

Physical Regeneration News: Estate builder selected

Developer Countryside Properties has won a £40 million contract to build 319 affordable homes on the Stonebridge Estate in Harlesden, north-west London. The scheme (see visualisation, above) is part of a comprehensive redevelopment of the 20ha estate by the Stonebridge Housing Action Trust. The action trust has selected Hyde Housing Association to set up a community-based housing association when the trust is wound-up in 2007. Building work is due to start in June and finish in early 2007. The next phase of the project is likely to include housing for sale to add a greater mix of tenures.
Scottish News: Bins to replace bags in capital heritage sites

Ministers have given the go-ahead to a controversial trial that will see large rubbish bins placed on streets in Edinburgh's two world heritage sites.
