Regeneration agency English Partnerships, Peterborough City Council and government watchdog the Environment Agency last week agreed to spend £1 million to improve the city's flood defences. English Partnerships hopes that they will lead to commercial development on 43ha of land in the eastern industrial area.

Eight local authorities that set up Arms Length Management Organisations (ALMOs) in 2001 to manage and improve their housing stock will get a further £473 million over the next two years. Announcing the funding last week, housing minister Keith Hill said the first-round ALMOs had made 137,000 homes warm, weatherproof and more modern.
