Shopping centre clear-out

Demolition began this week of Portsmouth's notorious Tricorn shopping centre. Clearance of the Brutalist structure will allow a major council-backed regeneration project to begin. In partnership with developer Centros Miller, the council is proposing a new retailled development organised around a network of open streets and public spaces. The development will comprise a range of new shops, 200 flats, restaurants and at least one department store. The demolition of was given the go-ahead earlier this month after the Government turned down an application to spot-list the building (Regeneration & Renewal, 19 March, p11).

A statistical review seen as key to giving a clearer picture of the economic health of the regions was completed this week. Conducted by economist Chris Allsopp, the review was commissioned by the Government to determine the statistics needed to promote regional growth and reduce the regional economic inequality. A fund that supports people on low incomes will get an extra £10 million in the upcoming financial year, pensions minister Chris Pond announced this week. The Social Fund provides interest-free loans and grants to people on low incomes with urgent financial needs. The £10 million will go to community care grants, which allow vulnerable people to stay in the community instead of moving to live in institutions. For more information, visit www.dwp.gov.uk.
