Two schemes to help deal with crime in Newcastle's West End were unveiled by the local New Deal for Communities (NDC) this week. SafeHome, a home security scheme, aims to make 1000 homes in the area safer by providing free security measures such as window and door locks, along with smoke alarms. In addition, a neighbourhood wardens scheme has been launched, with 12 wardens taking to the streets to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

Chinatown arch for Newcastle

The final contracts were signed to build an 11-metre high arch in Newcastle's Chinatown this week. The structure, will feature glazed tiles and elaborate colour paintings, and will be built by a team of workmen flown over from China. In addition to the thousands of pounds raised by Newcastle's Chinese community, funding will come from Newcastle City Council, regional development agency One North-East, the Heritage Lottery Fund and local partnership Sponsors Club for Arts and Business. Civic chiefs hope the arch will provide a focal point for the regeneration of the area, which will include Chinese gardens and street lanterns.

Firms urged to boost volunteer constables

The home secretary has called on retailers and employees to play a greater role in fighting crime. Speaking at a trade union conference this week, David Blunkett urged all employers to increase volunteering to help fight crime. In particular, he called on retailers to follow the example of London's Shop Watch scheme and Norfolk's Step. In these, employees who volunteer to become special constables get paid leave to attend a training course and to walk a beat for a few hours each week.

£3bn for extra Gateway housing

Moves: Appointment at English Partnerships

Government regeneration agency English Partnerships has announced new appointments to its board. They are Dr John Belcher, chief executive of social landlord the Anchor Trust; Aman Dalvi OBE, chief executive of inward investment agency Gateway to London; Robert Napier, chief executive of the UK arm of the World Wide Fund for Nature; and Dr Anne Wright, a consultant specialising in e-learning and in higher education.
