Urban environment charity the Civic Trust has promoted deputy chairman Nigel Burton to the position of chairman. He replaces Dame Jennifer Jenkins, who had been acting as interim chairman. Burton is director of development and services at retailer Waitrose. Jenkins will continue as a trustee. The trust has also appointed three new trustees.

The masterplan envisages a mixed-use neighbourhood featuring commercial, leisure and residential uses. Plans for a new community in Pembroke Dock in Wales were launched last week. The masterplan for Martello Quays envisages up to 450 new homes, plus commercial and leisure space (see visualisation above), with the Martello tower as a focal point. The scheme would involve creating a lock to prevent water from draining away from the dock, which currently turns into mudflats at low tide. The civil engineering project would create new "fingers of land" stretching into the bay for development. The plan has been drawn up by developer Martello Quays on behalf of Pembrokeshire County Council, the Welsh Development Agency, the Crown Estate, Milford Haven Port Authority and Milford Haven Dock Company.

More than 1,000 South Kilburn residents attended a jobs fair organised by a New Deal for Communities (NDC) programme last week. The north-west London residents were entertained by Del Boy-lookalike Maurice Canham as they met potential employers, found information on training and were given funding to support courses. The event, organised by South Kilburn NDC, was free. The NDC is planning to repeat the fair as part of its bid to tackle unemployment in the area. Since the NDC began in 2000, unemployment rates in the area have fallen by five per cent to 11.2 per cent.
