In brief: Woodland Trust launches campaign

The nation's oldest trees could be listed under proposals launched to protect them from urbanisation and vandalism. The Woodland Trust launched a campaign this week calling for legislation to recognise trees as "green monuments". Ancient trees would be listed under the scheme and penalties could be imposed for damage or neglect. The campaign is backed by English Heritage, English Nature and the Forestry Commission.

A bid to ban night flights at European airports has failed in the European parliament after receiving little support from MEPs. Only 54 members backed the proposal, launched by Green Party MEP Caroline Lucas in London earlier this year. But John Stewart, chairman of lobby group HACAN Clear Skies, said: "Night flights are now being talked about in the corridors of power across Europe. We intend to build on that."

In brief: Birmingham football and cricket clubs in talks with council over stadium plans

Birmingham City Football Club and Warwickshire County Cricket Club are in talks with Birmingham City Council over plans to move to a 60,000-seat stadium in the city's Eastside area. It is envisaged that the stadium would be able to host international cricket matches throughout the year, the football club's home fixtures and major athletics meetings. The scheme, based on the design of Melbourne's Telstra Dome, includes a fully retractable roof and moveable lower levels of seating. The council is set to commission a feasibility study into the project.

In brief: Swiss Re opens London headquarters

Reinsurance company Swiss Re opened its skyscraper London headquarters at 30 St Mary Axe this week. The 180m tower, designed by Lord Foster, has been lauded for its energy efficient technology and earned the tag "erotic gherkin" for its curved glass and steel shape. The company will occupy around half of the 20,400 sq m with approximately 800 employees. Other tenants for the building have yet to be signed.

Latest designs for a £250 million city centre regeneration scheme for Bradford have been revealed. Property group Stannifer is redeveloping the city's Broadway shopping centre. Work has begun on the 6.4ha site to provide 54,762 sq m of retail floorspace with offices, housing and leisure facilities. The latest designs were drawn up by architect Benoy.
