The Shropshire town of Ludlow is basking in its new-found status as the UK's first official Slow City. The accolade was only conferred after the town passed strict tests of its credentials in areas such as encouraging walking and cycling, hospitality to visitors, historic environment protection and use of local products.

The deputy prime minister has agreed that 12 leylandii trees next to a Hampshire bungalow should be removed because they had an unacceptable and overbearing influence on the living conditions of the occupier, even though they were the subject of a preservation order.
