A single pot of cash to provide drug treatment for young people has been created, the Home Office announced this week. The £50 million fund is to be used by drug action teams for under-19s. It will pay for education, early intervention and treatment schemes. The fund pulls together money from the Home Office, departments for Health and Education and the youth justice board. Communities must be involved more in planning applications, planning minister Keith Hill said this week. The Government is revising the outline planning permission system to require developers to give more details on issues such as inclusive design and environmental impact. Hill said this would deliver real interaction with the community. The revision will be considered as part of the planning and compulsory purchase Bill currently going through parliament.

Police officers are to be freed up to provide high visibility policing in communities, under an initiative launched by the home secretary last week. Forces in ten pilot areas will get a share of £13 million to recruit civilians to do station-based jobs, allowing officers to get back on the front line. Scottish canals are to benefit from £2.2 million of government funding, it was revealed this week. The canals are thought to be essential for boosting Scottish tourism and the money will be spent on improving access to the waterways. The South East of England Development Agency and the South East Regional Assembly have appointed Anke Seidler as their regional representative in Brussels. Seidler will be responsible for representing the South-East's interests in Europe by lobbying, gathering intelligence and networking. She previously worked in the European Commission's Directorate-General for energy and transport.

The Government Office for London has established a Sustainable Communities team to take forward the Communities Plan agenda. The team will be led by Richard Blyth, who moves from the Berkshire Unitary Authorities, and includes Hilary Bowman from consultancy Urban Initiatives, Charlotte Millar from consultancy RPS and Dean Tyler and Jeremy Rowett from the Government Office for London.
