In Brief: Creation of industry body to represent aerospace companies

Almost £1.5 million is being invested in creating an industry body to represent aerospace companies throughout the Midlands. Advantage West Midlands and the East Midlands Development Agency are jointly funding the Midlands Aerospace Alliance. The industry-led organisation will hold events and seminars to spread best practice and improve competitiveness.

England World Cup winner Jack Charlton kicked off a £2 million regeneration project in his native Northumberland this week. The money will be spent on transforming a derelict former miners' welfare centre in Ashington into a community facility. The Hirst Welfare Centre will house a football centre of excellence, with £500,000 from the Football Foundation.

In Brief: Planning recommendations for affordable housing

Planning recommendations to help deliver affordable housing in rural Wales will be taken forward in revised guidance, according to planning minister Carwyn Jones. The minister has responded to a report from the Welsh Assembly Government's environment, planning and countryside committee, published in January, which seeks more flexible planning policies on housing. Jones said that many of the committee's recommendations would be worked into Technical Advice Note 2 on planning and affordable housing.

In Brief: Seafront tower could be built in Swansea

A seafront tower with flats and a rooftop restaurant could be built in Swansea after plans for the 29-storey structure were submitted to Swansea City and County Council last week. The 106m tower is part of a mixed-use development that would provide around 290 flats in blocks ranging from six to 29 storeys in the city's Maritime Quarter. The scheme also includes shops, restaurants and leisure facilities and refurbishing a multi-storey car park.

The guidance, prepared by Arup, is intended to help local authorities and regional planning bodies assess the environmental consequences of alternative methods of meeting aggregates demand.

In Brief: Plans for indoor snow sports centre submitted

Plans for an indoor snow sports centre have been submitted to Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council. The scheme, by Mountaineering Activities and Peel Investments, involves building snow slopes for skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing as well as facilities for ice and rock climbing and skateboarding on a 4.45ha site next to Manchester's Trafford Centre. The £28 million facility is scheduled to open in 2006.

More than 300 professional planners have joined the RTPI's regeneration network, making it the UK's largest body of regeneration planning professionals. The network was launched two years ago and has now secured the status of an official RTPI body. It is fronted by a steering group of national regeneration experts hosting quarterly business meetings.

In Brief: Approval of asylum centre challenged

19 March 2004

The approval of an asylum centre in Oxfordshire was set to be challenged in the High Court as Planning went to press. Deputy prime minister John Prescott gave the go-ahead for the centre near Bicester against the recommendations of a planning inspector last summer (Planning, 23 August 2003, p1). But Cherwell District Council has launched a judicial review against his decision. The proposals involve building a centre for around 750 people on land at Piddington.
