Regeneration minister Yvette Cooper this week joined schoolchildren in their first visit to a newly built sports centre in Kensington, Liverpool. The £2 million Kensingston Sports Centre, which is due to open to the public in March, was built with the help of £460,000 from Kensington Regeneration. The centre will have links with a new junior and infants school and will contain a lifelong learning centre.

The Clear Skies Initiative, managed by the Building Research Establishment, has provided £2.3 million to charities, housing associations, schools, councils and hospitals since last June.

A new bursary scheme is to help voluntary organisations explore ways of generating income. The Only Connect initiative, sponsored by charity banking specialist Triodos Bank, offers charities up to £100 to visit another organisation with a proven track record in making money from trading. COMMUNITY RENEWAL BRIEF: Burglar alarms to be installed
23 January 2004
Five hundred burglar alarms are to be installed in the Aston area of Birmingham as part of the £54 million New Deal for Communities (NDC) initiative. The £500,000 home security project has been developed by Aston Pride Community Safety Team, a joint initiative between the NDC and the West Midlands police and fire services. Panic buttons, movement and door sensors will also be installed in homes.
