Planning permission has been granted by Alnwick District Council for a pavilion and visitor centre at the Alnwick Garden, Northumberland. The structures, designed by Hopkins Architects, are intended to enhance the redeveloped Victorian garden, which attracts 500,000 visitors a year.

Cumbria County Council is drawing up a development strategy for the port of Workington. The first task is to produce a masterplan for the port area and identify links with existing regeneration opportunities. PHYSICAL REGENERATION BRIEF: Northwich village plans approved

Plans for an urban village in Northwich, Cheshire, on one of the largest brownfield areas in the North-West, have received planning approval. Planning consultancy Hepher Dixon and the Winnington Urban Village Consortium's mixed-use development includes 1,200 homes, commercial and leisure uses, community facilities and extensive green spaces along the River Weaver. The 56ha former industrial site is largely owned by chemicals company Brunner Mond.
PHYSICAL REGENERATION BRIEF: Simons Estates submits application

An outline planning application to redevelop part of Wakefield city centre in West Yorkshire has been submitted by developer Simons Estates. The plans for the 52,000sq metre mixed-use shopping centre include an outdoor market and integration of the scheme with the existing retail core and surrounding streets. A listed Elizabethan art gallery is planned for the centre of a new public square.

A town square forms the centrepiece of a competition-winning design plan for Ilford town centre in east London, drawn up by GWM Architects and Rummey Design Associates. The development, by Capital & Counties and Countryside Properties, would include 488 apartments, 11,000sq metres of retail and leisure amenities, and 1,500sq metres of community facilities on the 2.6ha site.
PHYSICAL REGENERATION NEWS: Liverpool waterfront forum

Urban regeneration company Liverpool Vision is inviting the public to comment on plans to redevelop brownfield land at Kings Waterfront. The plan (see visualisation, above) envisages a multi-use arena, exhibition space, a conference centre, apartments, offices, hotels, leisure and retail uses, together with open spaces and car parking. Everton Football Club pulled out of plans for a 55,000-seater stadium on the site last year. An exhibition, including a computer demonstration of the proposals, will be held at the Moat House Hotel, Paradise Street, Liverpool, from 28 January to 2 February.
