Kent County Council has secured £3.5 million from the ODPM's sustainable communities fund to help finance plans for a centre for public and voluntary services in Ashford. The Discovery Centre will act as a community hub and will feature a library, job centre, health centre, nursery facilities and a marriage suite. Designs for a landmark building to house the centre will go to competition later this year.

Irwell Valley Housing Association and house builder Lovell have launched a £5.5 million scheme for the Sale area of Manchester. The regeneration plans involve demolishing 36 flats, a two-storey block and maisonettes dating from 1972. They will be replaced by 53 houses and apartments.

A £1.3 million scheme that offers grants to bring redundant buildings back to life in Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire has been launched by regional development agency Advantage West Midlands (AWM). Grants of up to £62,000 will be made available to convert or refurbish redundant buildings in rural priority areas. AWM rural director Mark Pearce said: "One of the major problems for rural business is a shortage of suitable premises. This scheme will be a massive boost in easing these difficulties."
