Former cabinet minister Stephen Byers this week called on the Labour Party to provide universal childcare as a means of tackling "poverty, inequality and a lack of social mobility". At childcare charity the Daycare Trust's annual lecture, Byers said that free childcare should be a top priority and the Governement should move beyond its present highly-targeted approach.

North-west Birmingham is being targeted for a major clean-up by three of the city's housing corporations and the city council. Two workers with a flat bed van are combing the streets three days a week looking for junk such as abandoned fridges, three-piece suites and ordinary rubbish. Sangeeta Redgrave, who is co-ordinating the project for the Midland Area, Focus and Family housing associations, said that litter and rubbish were top of people's list of problems which affected their quality of life. Housing and environmental teams within the associations and city council are encouraged to call out the clean-up team to tackle problems. It is hoped the project will be expanded to other areas in Birmingham.
