Spending by visitors to woodland areas contributes £2.3 billion to the UK economy each year, claims a Forestry Commission report published this week. Forestry minister Ben Bradshaw said the study showed that forests and woodlands play a vital role in the rural economy, attracting people to the wider countryside. Scottish woodlands, such as those in Inverness-shire (above) attract more than 22 million visits a year, at a boost of £163 million to the economy. In Wales, 1.8 per cent of annual tourism spending - £51 million - was by forest visitors. Forests' Role in Tourism is available at www.forestry.gov.uk/economics.
