Minerva tower to take to the skies

The Corporation of London has given permission for the latest and tallest in a series of tower blocks in the square mile. The 50-floor Minerva Building, designed by UK architect Nicholas Grimshaw, will be 217 metres high, and will be the first single building in the city to provide 1 million square feet of space. Andrew Rosenfeld, chief executive of property developer Minerva, said: "This is a major achievement not only for Minerva, but for the City of London." Historical buildings watchdog English Heritage said it would not ask the Government to examine the proposals.

Charles Choguill has been appointed as professor of planning at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He was a member of the department of town and regional planning at the University of Sheffield from 1971 to 1996 and has since held posts in Australia, including a spell as professional fellow at the University of Melbourne.

Steve Crocker has been appointed as area manager in the department of neighbourhoods and housing at Leeds City Council. He will help develop district partnerships and deliver neighbourhood services. Crocker moves from the neighbourhood renewal unit at the ODPM, where he was a senior adviser.
