NEWS IN BRIEF: CPRE chief executive quits

Kate Parminter has quit as chief executive of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE). She resigned citing family reasons but will remain in her post until a successor is found. Parminter said: "Balancing family responsibilities with two young daughters and the demands of running a high-profile campaigning organisation is becoming just too hard for me." CPRE chairman Sir Nigel Thompson said: "We are extremely grateful to Kate for her enormous contribution."

Proposals for an urban development corporation (UDC) in west Northamptonshire were launched as Planning went to press this week. Regeneration minister Lord Rooker announced an eight-week consultation into the proposed UDC, which will include Northampton, Daventry and Towcester. It will be based on a partnership between four local authorities, English Partnerships and the East Midlands Development Agency.

The chief executive of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has resigned in order to spend more time with her family. Kate Parminter, who has held the post for more than five years, said that balancing family responsibilities with running a high-profile campaign group had become too hard. It is understood that Parminter, who previously worked for animal charity the RSPCA, will not be moving to another organisation. She will continue to head the CPRE until a successor is appointed.
