With planning legislation on the near horizon heralding the most far-reaching reforms for half a century, this should be a time for quiet confidence.

Sir Peter Hall's eloquent plea for action to follow words provided a coda, on his acceptance just before Christmas of the institute's Gold Medal. The medal was the first to be presented for two decades. The nadir of planning is past. There are bold regional and sub-regional plans to be made and a new planning system recognising a community dimension to operate. New challenges await at every corner.
