A memorial service is being held at St-Martins-in-the-Bullring, Birmingham, on 22 January for Les Milner, the founder of housing association and charity St Basil's. The organisation provides a range of services for vulnerable young people in the West Midlands. Milner, who was director of St Basil's for 27 years, died at the age of 68 after a short illness.

An upgrade of Thameslink rail services is on course to bring major benefits to businesses and residents in the South East of England, according to the chair of the Thameslink 2000 consortium. At a recent meeting of consortium members, Mark Miller said that earlier setbacks would not hold up the delivery of improvements. He predicted that implementation of the scheme will begin in 2006.
