Junior Neighbourhood Wardens in Southampton were presented with their own uniforms to mark their participation in a city council-run scheme which aims to build community pride. Nearly 40 youngsters aged up to 14 have been taking part in the scheme since it was launched in October. Funded with £5,000 from the Southampton West Neighbourhood Partnership, the scheme is being piloted in Millbrook area, which has also received Single Regeneration Budget funding. Youngsters, including those pictured above, had to take part in at least three projects before they gained their uniforms. Working alongside the council's official neighbourhood wardens, they have helped to pick up litter and visit pensioners. The council is considering extending the scheme across the rest of the city.

Immigration and asylum is now perceived to be the third most important issue facing Britain, according to the results of a new opinion poll from the Mori Social Research Institute. Only the state of the NHS and education system were seen as more pressing by those who took part in the survey.
