A programme to clean up former industrial sites along the River Mersey in Stockport has been granted £3.5 million from the European Regional Development Fund. Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council's River Valley reclamation programme is intended to enhance the visual impact and ecology of the city and offer a number of improved recreational areas for residents and visitors.

Urban design firm Urban Initiatives is to produce a study of a 5.4ha brownfield site in Liverpool. The practice was appointed by urban regeneration company Liverpool Vision and will prepare a scheme for former railway land at Exchange Station Yard in the city's commercial district. Planning consent will be sought by the spring.

Consultant LB City Strategies was appointed last week to produce a masterplan for Gospel Oak in north London, one of the Government's 20 neighbourhood management pathfinders. The masterplan for Camden Council is intended to guide physical regeneration in Gospel Oak over the next 30 years. The pathfinder programmes are aimed at improving the quality of life in the country's poorest areas.

PHYSICAL REGENERATION NEWS: Revamped Hackney theatre opens

Hackney Empire variety theatre reopened its doors this week after a two-year closure for a £17 million refurbishment. The theatre, originally built in 1901, was refurbished by architectural practice Tim Ronalds Architects. Recently a venue mostly for local community shows, the changes also mean the theatre can now play host to West End-scale productions, which had been previously prohibited by access problems. To complete the second stage of building work, including a new bar, corporate hospitality suite and education suite, the Empire still needs to raise another £1 million.
