A shortlist of nine architects has been announced for the next stage of a competition to design a 1.6ha waterside neighbourhood on the edge of Manchester city centre. More than 70 architects from 19 countries entered the competition, organised by the Royal Institute of British Architects on behalf of Urban Splash and Salford City Council. The shortlist includes de Rijke Marsh Morgan of London, Vienna's Share Architects and Manchester-based Provan and Makin Architects. A winner will be announced at the end of February.

Specialist consultants are being sought to carry out a feasibility study into the development of cultural facilities in Leeds. The study, commissioned by the Leeds Cultural Partnership, will establish the viability of developments such as a concert hall, arena and conference or exhibition centre. It will include assessing the demand for facilities, gaps in provision and the impact on existing venues. The partnership hopes to appoint a consultant by April, with the full report expected in September.

People are being invited to air their views on a derelict former colliery that has been awarded grade II scheduled monument status. The former Chatterley Whitfield colliery near Stoke-on-Trent, has been earmarked for jobs, training opportunities and community facilities. An initial consultation meeting was held this week and a second has been arranged for 7 February. It will be attended by representatives of English Heritage, landowner Stoke-on-Trent City Council and English Partnerships, the organisation leading the plans.

Community groups in Wakefield have secured a £1 million lottery grant to fund improvements to open spaces across the borough. The money from the New Opportunities Fund will enable seven community led-projects to be completed over the next three years including children's play areas, a park in Castleford and an eco-building on allotments at Agbrigg.

BDP has been chosen to design the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton. The design will reflect the maritime location and will include an atrium to be used for art classes and puppet shows. The facility, one of seven paediatric hospitals in the UK, is due to open in 2006 and will be integrated with the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
