The Inland Navigator made its maiden voyage last week, carrying the first of two 280-tonne loads along the River Trent from the Humber Estuary to the National Grid Transco substation at Staythorpe in Nottinghamshire. The barge, owned by transport consultancy Robert Wynn and Sons, was converted at a cost of £500,000, 99 per cent of which was met by a Department for Transport freight facilities grant.

The seven-storey building will accommodate a workforce of 1,200. The £15 million regeneration of a derelict site in Lichfield has moved a step closer after the ODPM approved compulsory purchase orders on several properties. The orders, which are needed to assemble the City Wharf site, will allow developer Redrow Homes to start work on its scheme to build homes and offices on the 5ha site in the summer. The scheme, which is backed by regional development agency Advantage West Midlands and Lichfield District Council, is expected to create up to 120 jobs.

An application for seven self-contained offices near Malton in North Yorkshire has been approved by Ryedale District Council. FPD Savills' 5,500 sq m office scheme will replace several cottages and outbuildings at the Swinton Grange site. Andrew McBeath, a director at the consultancy's York office, said: "This is the largest speculative office scheme in the district and will provide excellent potential for increased employment opportunities in Malton and Ryedale."
