Deputy prime minister John Prescott's swing through the north of England last week drummed up support for the vote on the establishment of elected regional assemblies. His leading argument is that they will make the north a better place to do business. They will need to, because the three regions involved - the North West, the North East and Yorkshire and the Humber - cannot expect to achieve an environmental or housing transformation unless their economies pick up and job opportunities to match those found further south are created.

The firm has also been appointed by the Forth Estuary Transport Authority to inspect and evaluate the main cables of the Forth Road Bridge.
