A group of youth club members aged between 11 and 18 have spoken out about what they think of their local neighbourhood through a story of art to be displayed in the heart of a 'no-go' area of Leeds. Inspired by the East Park Community Association, set up four years ago by local people in a bid to halt the rot of the Richmond Hill, Cross Green and East End Park areas of Leeds, seven young people last week completed a three-week project to portray, through imagery, how they perceive their area. Using a variety of media, they produced a collage of graffiti, burnt-out cars and run-down housing as their interpretation of where they live. Their work will be displayed in a newly-opened community centre.

Scottish schools are "well short" of meeting the needs of the country's most vulnerable children, the head of Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education told a conference last week. Graham Donaldson said that high-quality teaching, an imaginative curriculum and a better focus on individuals' needs would help bridge "the opportunity gap".
