A derelict school in Bradford has been turned into the new headquarters for Shipley Community Housing Trust. The trust, the town's largest social landlord, hopes that The Old School's conversion will act a catalyst for the wider regeneration of the area. The school's clock tower, a local landmark, has also been restored as part of the project.

Councils dealing with more planning applications say figures

Councils are dealing with more planning applications in less time, according to figures published last week. In the year ending September 2004, local planning authorities determined an average 55 per cent of major planning applications within 13 weeks, the Government's Best Value target. Research carried out by the Government also failed to find evidence of councils abusing the system to meet official targets. The Planning Performance Checklist can be viewed at www.odpm.gov.uk.

Sheffield City Council to receive further money

Sheffield City Council is to receive a further £18.7 million this year following a favourable report by the Audit Commission on its arms-length management organisation. Sheffield Homes, which manages 58,000 homes on behalf of the local authority, was praised for tackling anti-social behaviour, offering tenants more choice and a wide range of rent paying options.

Ferguson McIlveen wins contract

Urban designer Ferguson McIlveen has won the contract to create a new town square in the Headland area of Hartlepool. The £1.4 million town square project will create three new open spaces: a courtyard in front of St Hilda's Church, a formal square in front of the Borough Hall and a Headland history garden.

Network launched to help people in regeneration

A network to help people working in regeneration was launched in the east of England last week. Inspire East, funded by the East of England Development Agency, ODPM and agencies including the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, is intended to raise skills and spread good practice in the region.
