Foster and Partners have been selected as the preferred designer for an office and hotel development in Pelham Square, Hastings. The firm of architects was selected from a shortlist of three designers by a panel including representatives from Hastings Borough Council and English Heritage. A poll showed that a majority of those consulted preferred Foster and Partners' proposals for a contemporary development that complements its historic surroundings.

Some of the quirkiest offices in the UK will be launched by Leaside Regeneration Ltd next month. Container Futures uses reclaimed shipping containers to provide office space. The scheme is at Poplar Riverside, an enterprise hub in the shadow of Canary Wharf that includes the refurbished grade II listed Old Poplar Library and the grade II* listed Bromley Hall.

Work started on site at the Allerton Bywater millennium community in West Yorkshire last week. The 24ha project, a joint initiative between English Partnerships and Leeds City Council, will provide 520 homes and 25,000 sq m of commercial and community space. Meanwhile, the group that will steer the Oakgrove millennium community in Milton Keynes met for the first time last week. The steering group, made up of representatives from Milton Keynes Council, English Partnerships and two parish councils, will oversee a scheme to develop 1,850 homes on a 64ha brownfield site.
