A company developing a 29.2ha site on the Lancashire coast is seeking ideas from architects for the design of a pedestrian-only village. Kensington Developments has launched a two-stage competition to help it draw up plans for a £650 million tourism, cultural, business and residential development near Lytham St Anne's. The closing date for entries to the competition, which is being organised by the Royal Institute of British Architects, is 9 January 2004.

More than 280ha of woodland has been planted in Merseyside and Cheshire in the past year, half of which has taken place on derelict land, the Mersey Forest has reported. Around 2,500ha of woodland has been planted since the organisation was launched in 1991. It aims to regenerate derelict and contaminated land by creating community forests.

A project offering residents of a south Bristol estate the chance to become involved in the regeneration of their neighbourhood has been awarded £24,000 of European Objective 2 funding. The money will allow the Community in Control project on the Inns Court estate to appoint a community development officer to work with residents to tackle problems experienced on the site. Vandalism, rubbish dumping and fears about crime have stopped many people from becoming involved in regeneration activities.

Work has started on the northern extension of Manchester's Arndale centre following the closure and demolition of Cannon Street and a former bus station. The £150 million project is the final piece in Manchester City Council's millennium masterplan for the regeneration of central Manchester. The extension will increase the centre's overall retail space by 91,400 sq m and will provide 75 shops, a covered winter garden and restaurants. Completion of the Manchester Arndale redevelopment is due in phases, starting in Christmas 2005.

The supply of affordable housing for the Wembley regeneration project will be led by Genesis Housing Group and Family Housing Group, the London Borough of Brent's housing service announced this week. The outline planning application received from Quintain Estates includes 4,000 homes, of which 40 per cent will be affordable. Quintain submitted its plans to Brent last month (Planning, 7 November, p5).

A strategy for development in Sheffield's Lower Don Valley is to be drawn up by Toronto-based masterplanners Urban Strategies. The British Land Company and Sheffield City Council have appointed the company to examine all the development options in the area. The six-month study will cover the area from the Don Valley Stadium to the eastern side of the M1 motorway. It will include all of the major leisure facilities in the area as well as the Meadowhall shopping centre.
