BOOK REVIEW: Women in East End enterprises

12 December 2003

Most of the 25 women profiled in Passions - Account 3's showcase of east London women entrepreneurs, are not from the East End. Many of them are from elsewhere in the UK; others are from further afield - from Bangladesh to Croatia, Morocco to New Zealand. But, they all share a passion for east London, which is best amplified by the many examples of how their varied enterprises have contributed to the wider regeneration of the area.

TURNING POINT: Impressions left by travel degree

12 December 2003

I hated school with a passion - it wasn't until I went to Hinckley College of Further Education and studied health and social care that I actually found my niche in life. I studied there for three years before going to Liverpool John Moores University to read for a BA (hons) in health studies.

BOOK REVIEW: Horrors of a cynical town survey

5 December 2003

What looks initially like a splendid idea - God knows, we're still suffering from the horrors of 1960s' planners and Thatcherite selfishness, loutishness and wilful underinvestment - is a wasted opportunity. Crap Towns is compiled by the editors of The Idler and, fittingly, they rarely get off their own arses to go out and investigate these places for themselves.

TURNING POINT: Taking the countryside to towns

5 December 2003

I've always loved the countryside - walking, cycling, picnics and just enjoying the peace and quiet. I can thank regular childhood trips to rural Shropshire for that. So it was no surprise that I developed an interest in conserving this precious resource.

DIARY: Freebies flop, ministry of insight and paradise for paper pushers

5 December 2003

As the world of regeneration journalism is not one known for its abundance of freebies, Diary was excited to receive a large and, for once, interesting-looking consignment through the post last week.

SKILLS: Skills tsar takes a broad brief

5 December 2003

Sir John Egan has been tasked with tackling the regeneration 'skills gap'. But is his wide interpretation of his brief leading to a loss of focus, asks Ben Willis.

EDITORIAL: Tapping sources of investment for deprived areas

By Richard Garlick

5 December 2003

In what you may think is a surprising development, hordes of Sunday Telegraph readers have apparently been depositing money in a new bank account that promises to reinvest their savings in charities or enterprises working in deprived areas.
