NEWS BRIEF: Disadvantaged schools to receive money

More than 1,000 primary schools in disadvantaged circumstances will receive extra money and support following the expansion of the Excellence in Schools Initiative. In 2004/05 £16 million will be available and £37 million in 2005/06. Speaking, listening and communication skills will be a particular focus of the initiative which aims to raise pupils' aspirations. A further £20 million will be available to support development of Foundation/Early Years focusing on speech, language and parental engagement. The authorities were chosen because of the high numbers of disadvantaged children living in families dependent on Income Support or Income-based Jobseekers Allowance.
NEWS BRIEF: Support among Labour voters falls

Support for increased welfare spending and more redistributive welfare policies has fallen among Labour voters, according to the 20th British Social Attitudes Survey. In 2002 50 per cent of Labour supporters backed increased spending on welfare benefits, compared with 73 per cent in 1987. For further information, visit www.sagepub.co.uk.
NEWS BRIEF: First toll motorway opens
12 December 2003
Britain's first toll motorway opened this week. Transport secretary Alistair Darling cut the ribbon on the first phase of the 27 mile M6 toll road. Drivers will be charged £2 to use the road which has been built to ease congestion on the adjacent M6. Phased opening of the toll road will be complete by the end of the week.
NEWS BRIEF: Children Now launching
12 December 2003
Britain's only weekly title dedicated to the children's service sector is being launched by Haymarket Publishing on 7 January. Children Now - formerly owned and published quarterly by the National Children's Bureau (NCB) - will be sent to more than 25,000 managers and senior practitioners in the sector. NEWS BRIEF: Network of experts needed

A network of urban regeneration experts is needed to drive forward the rejuvenation of the east of England's urban areas, according to a plan launched by the East of England Development Agency. The Towns and Cities Action Plan for the East of England calls for government funding to set up a network that would focus on improving and sharing skills. NEWS BRIEF: Disadvantaged to receive childcare

Disadvantaged parents in ten Scottish local authorities will receive flexible childcare funding to help them into work and training, the Scottish Executive announced this week. MOVES: Groundwork Stoke-on-Trent appoints directors

Environmental regeneration charity Groundwork Stoke-on-Trent has appointed three new directors to its board. They are David Hallam, the development manager of the Staffordshire Business and Environment Network, Jon Fairburn, a senior lecturer in Staffordshire University's Geography Department, and Kevin Khayat, the assistant chief executive of education agency Connexions Staffordshire. They replace Ken Thornber CBE, who stood down in August, and Ken Bodfish OBE and Barry Camfield who are due to stand down at the end of the year.
MOVES: Nexus makes new appointments

Nexus Housing, formerly Worcestershire Housing Association, has made three new appointments. Catherine Cole takes the post of senior housing manager, Cassandra Lewington has joined as customer services manager, and Ken Hazeldene has been appointed as operations manager.
MOVES: Brownfield expert to help lead work

A brownfield redevelopment expert has been appointed to help lead regeneration work in Camborne, Pool and Redruth in Cornwall. John Dobson has joined urban regeneration company CPR Regeneration as deputy chief executive and director of development. He joins from the South West Regional Development Agency where he was dedicated regeneration manager for the Camborne, Pool and Redruth area.
MOVES: Scedu chair stands down
12 December 2003
The voluntary chair and director of Sheffield's community enterprise agency Scedu has stood down. The resignation of Mike West, a co-founder of Scedu, coincides with his forthcoming retirement from the directorship of the Open Forum for Economic Regeneration. West, a former industrial chaplain, helped set up Scedu in 1995. Scedu now encompasses six different organisations including South Yorkshire Key Fund which has distributed more than £11 million in grants over the last 12 months.
