Car manufacturer Nissan will get a regional selective assistance package of £3.26 million, said industry minister Jacqui Smith last week. More than 250 Sunderland jobs will be secured by the grant, which accompanies a £95 million investment by Nissan in a new model, said the Department of Trade and Industry.

A £147 million package of transport funding for London's boroughs was unveiled last week by mayor Ken Livingstone. The 2004-05 fund will be used for road maintenance, safety schemes and initiatives to promote walking, cycling and town centre improvements.
